“Living Legend” Park Jin-young released his new digital single, “When We Disco (Duet with Sunmi)”, on August 12.
After releasing raunchy dance songs such as “Who’s Your Mama? (Feat. Jessi)” in April 2015 and “FEVER (Feat. SUPERBEE, BIBI)” in December 2019, Park established himself as the best dance-pop singer remaining in the industry.
As a follow-up, he will make a comeback in eight months with his first release in 2020 to lead the dance-pop trend.
Everything about the self-penned, self-produced “When We Disco (Duet with SUNMI)” - from the inspiration behind the song to the story of its muse, which was a topic of great interest with all of Park’s songs – is dramatic.
Notably, this song is Park’s first song to incorporate Euro disco themes. It is also injected with his unique musical caliber and refined sounds.
Park Jin-young grew up listening to Motown songs of the 1970s; his music naturally traces its roots back to the area. Because of this, he didn’t listen to the then-popular Euro disco music in middle school. However, he still remembered the days when he would dance to disco songs with his friends.
One day, Park suddenly got inspired by the opening theme of MBC’s talk show Radio Star, “Brother Louie” by Modern Talking. He finished composing the track within hours.
The song was recorded using Euro disco instruments and sound-recording equipment from the 1980s, perfectly recreating the retro sound.
The fond memories Park shared with his “beloved student” Sunmi, Korea’s “unrivaled female solo artist” who first rose to stardom under JYP Entertainment as a member of Wonder Girls and a solo artist, led to this incredible collaboration.
Around the time he finished the song, Sunmi shared the songs she enjoyed listening to when she and Park were promoting in the U.S. The two naturally started bringing up their memories. Park suggested a duet, thinking the lyrics “I miss those days when we disco” fell in with their situation. Sunmi responded positively, which led to the ultimate collaboration.
The “Park Jin-young X Sunmi” collaboration became a sensation once it was announced. Due to the rave reactions, the music video was released early. The music video, which was released a day before the song’s release, pays tribute to films Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction. Park Jin-young gave many ideas to the project planning, which resulted in several points to note in the video. He also proposed several spontaneous suggestions on the filming site. He did not hold back on his one-of-a-kind facial expressions, entertaining everyone.
The endless and compelling choreography - which live up to Park’s nickname, “King of Performances” - is definitely the best highlight. Park recalled the dances from his middle school days as he came up with the choreography. The flowing, elegant moves satisfied his wishes.
Among the songs Park Jin-young wrote and produced, 58 songs topped Korean and international music charts. As a hit maker
